Social Enterprise Leader Speaks at Neighborhood House

Convergence was the focus of the January 8 Neighborhood House Investor Meeting and keynote address by Dr. Roberto Gutierrez.  His presentation, “Partnerships for Social Impact”, led to a spirited discussion among the over 60 leaders from the non-profit and corporate community who attended the event.

Globally, non-profits earn 57% of their resources from selling goods and services while corporations in the United States are increasing donations, encouraging employee volunteer activities and delivering services commercially that previously were provided only by non-profits and government.

Dr. Gutierrez studies this convergence of for-profit and non-profit roles and is one of the foremost global experts in the Social Enterprise field.  For the past five years, he has chaired the Social Enterprise Knowledge Network (SEKN), an alliance of 10 universities from all over the Americas and Spain, and currently directs the Social Enterprise Initiative in the School of Administration at the Universidad de los Andes, where he is an Associate Professor.

According to Dr. Gutierrez, collaborations between the corporate world and non-profit fall into one of three categories: philanthropic, transactional, and integrative.  Organizations
pursuing a partnership must make sure that the partnering organizations are aligned.  Like values are a must; similar strategies and mission significantly increase the odds of success.  While offering many examples of successful partnerships, including some of the over 250 partnerships Neighborhood House has, he urged both corporation and non-profits to ensure organizational alignment before entering into new agreements.

The work of Dr.  Gutierrez and his colleagues is widely published.  Their book, Social Partnering in Latin America (Harvard University Press), provides an in-depth analysis of this important trend, while "The New Road: Strategic Social Partnerships" is a summary of the research.  "Capitalizing on Convergence", published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, posits that both profits and nonprofits "still have a lot to learn from each other."

"I know many people are reluctant to use the food shelf and even more are reluctant to talk about using it. I am not. The food shelf was my family's bridge to a better life."
