Students prepare for Days on the Hill
Recently, 20 of our youth were part of a group learning and discussion about local government to prepare for the upcoming Days on the Hill event in March. Kaying Thao, who works for the St. Paul Police Department in community engagement, led the discussion and gave an overview of how the government is organized.
Thao presented the demographics of those currently in office (very few people of color and majority males) and students commented on how their voices were not being represented. They also talked about the three things in their lives that were most important to them and how they could engage with those in office in order to have their concerns be a part of a larger discussion. Finally, Thao recommended that the youth spend some time volunteering and suggested that applying to become a judge on Election Day was a good place to start.
